The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have become an important guideline for organizations to monitor and plan their contributions to social, economic, and environmental transformations. Efforts to monitor the SDGs in the output of academic organizations have so far been spearheaded by for-profit organizations with methodologies that are only partly publicly available and cannot be easily applied beyond academic publishing databases. To alleviate these shortcomings, we have developed text2sdg, an open-source solution that lets users detect SDGs in any kind of text using a total of five different systems of search queries.
The goal of this data visualization hackathon is twofold:
Participants stand to win prizes by producing data visualizations that address either or both of the goals. Participants can enter two competitions, judged by the audience and an expert jury, respectively, to earn recognition as the SDG-hackathon winners, win books, and be featured in an article in the nightingale journal of the data visualization society.
The basis of participants' visualizations is the p3 database of the Swiss National Science Foundation, which includes descriptions of research projects that we labeled using the text2sdg package. More information on the data and the query systems, as well as access to the data is provided via GitHub. More information on the schedule, hackathon rules, and the submission process is provided below.
The data is shared via a dedicated GitHub page. Access the page and the data using the button below. The GitHub page provides detailed information on the methodology used in preparing the data. Learn more about the submission, hackathon rules, and evaluation below.

Please keep in mind the following rules for participating in the hackathon.
Visualizations submitted to either competition shall address the hackathon's goals by communicating insights on the query-based SDG labeling systems, the distribution of SDGs across the Swiss research landscape, or both.
Judges: Everyone registered at the SDG Hackathon.
Evaluation: Participants (including teams) select their five favorite data visualizations via a dedicated voting site (link shared via mail). The data visualization with the most votes will receive the Public Award.
Judges: Jury of data visualization and sustainability experts.
Evaluation: In stage one, jury members select their ten favorite data visualizations. In stage two, the ten visualizations with the most votes are evaluated in terms of innovativeness, attractiveness, story, and the hackathon goals. In stage three, a shortlist of the three visualizations with the best ratings will discussed by the jury to determine the Jury Award winner.
We want the SDG Hackathon to be a productive and enjoyable event and a safe place for all participants. We thus ask participants to abide to the following rules of conduct.
